Case Referral Program
Low-income Nebraskans in need of legal representation often lack the resources to hire an attorney. VLP's Case Referral program places low-income Nebraskans directly with an attorney, at no cost to the client. In 2023, VLP's Case Referral program helped nearly 300 people directly and nearly 350 indirectly. The Case Referral extends all across the state, having reached persons in nearly 40 counties in 2023. Cases that come through the program are placed with attorneys either pro bono, or for a reduced fee. Information on both types of case referrals are detailed below. If you have any questions about the Case Referral Program or would like to volunteer, please email Shannon Seim at [email protected].

Pro Bono Case ReferralVolunteers who take cases through the Pro Bono Case Referral program can provide either full or limited scope representation for the client they are assigned to. Case types include bankruptcy, consumer debt, family law, small claims, wills and powers of attorney.

Reduced Fee Case ReferralThrough the federal Victims of Crime Act, VLP is able to pay attorneys a reduced fee to represent victims of violent crimes in civil legal matters related to the crime committed against them. These are most often family law cases for victims of domestic violence. The hope is that the small fee will make taking on more compelling, but more complex pro bono cases a possibility.
